What a HorseSpeak Retreat Is

A HorseSpeak retreat is a 3–4 day immersive experience at the ranch — time to slow down, step away from noise, and let your nervous system settle.

Guided by MaryBeth and the herd, you’ll explore awareness, confidence, and self-trust through grounded experiences with the horses. There is no performance here — only presence.

Retreats are small (maximum eight participants), gently held, and designed to give you space to reconnect with yourself. You can engage fully, observe quietly, or move at your own pace. Choice and consent are always part of the experience.

How Retreats Feel

Retreats move at a slower, steadier rhythm.

There is time to arrive, to settle, and to let the land do some of the work.

Mornings may begin quietly. Time with the horses unfolds gently — sometimes on the ground, sometimes riding (each retreat will say).

There are pauses between experiences for rest, reflection, or simply breathing.

You are not required to share. You are not required to ride.

You are invited to participate in the way that feels honest for you.

Nothing is forced. Nothing is rushed.

The Role of the Horses

PRESENCE, NOT PERFORMANCE

The horses are not tools. They are partners in the work.

They respond to clarity and presence — not to performance or explanation.

When something feels unsettled inside, they notice. When something aligns, they notice that too. Their feedback is honest and without judgment.

FROM THE GROUND UP

Every retreat begins on the ground. Connection and trust come first.

Many women come to ride — or to rebuild lost confidence. Riding is welcomed and often part of the experience.

It’s never about performance. It’s about finding steadiness again.

YOUR PACE, YOUR CHOICE

No horse experience is needed.

You can engage directly, take things slowly, or choose to observe. Participation is always by choice.

The learning does not depend on how much you do — it grows from how present you are willing to be.

Retreats are guided by MaryBeth, a licensed therapist and lifelong horsewoman, alongside a steady and supportive team.

The work is therapeutic-informed, but not clinical treatment. It is held in a grounded, relational way — attentive, paced, and respectful of individual boundaries.

Groups are small (no more than eight participants). Sharing is optional. You are supported, not pushed.

Life at the Ranch

Retreats are held fully on-site at Cowgirl Up Ranch. Once you arrive, you step into ranch life for the weekend — slower, grounded, and away from the noise.

Accommodation is shared in simple, comfortable bunkhouses with beds, a small fridge, and space to rest. Bathrooms include a marine-style toilet and an outdoor shower.
There’s no air-conditioning, and it’s intentionally back-to-basics.

Days include time with the horses and the natural rhythm of the ranch — feeding animals, grooming, and light chores. Participation is part of the immersion — not as labour, but as a way to settle your nervous system and feel connected to real life again.

This is not a luxury retreat. It’s a working ranch — for a few days, you become part of it.

Who Retreats Tend to Be For

People arrive at retreat from many different places.

Often, they’re feeling stressed, anxious, or at a crossroads.
Sometimes they’re rebuilding
confidence — with horses, or in life.

Retreats tend to suit those who:

  • Want steady, grounded growth

  • Are open to working with horses

  • Prefer honest experience over quick fixes

Retreats may not be the right fit if you:

  • Are seeking guaranteed results

  • Prefer highly structured programs

  • Are uncomfortable with outdoor ranch environments

You don’t have to be certain. Just curious enough to explore.

Before You Join a Retreat

  • A HorseSpeak retreat is a multi-day, immersive experience centered on connection with horses, guided learning, and shared community. Retreats are structured, trauma-informed, and intentionally paced. Each retreat is unique to the group present.

  • No. Most participants arrive with little or no horse experience. All interactions are guided and supported.

  • Some retreats include riding, while others are entirely ground-based. Riding details are clearly outlined on each individual retreat listing.

  • Yes. HorseSpeak is a working ranch, and many retreats include light, guided participation in feeding, grooming, and basic ranch care. These shared tasks are part of building relationship and responsibility.

  • Retreats are held on-site in shared rustic bunkhouses. Bathrooms are shared. The setting is simple, comfortable, and grounded in the natural rhythm of ranch life.

  • Yes. Retreats typically include shared meals. Specific details, including dietary options, are listed on each retreat page.

  • No. For the safety of the herd, working dogs, and animals who live on the ranch, outside animals are not permitted.

  • No. The retreat space is held intentionally for registered participants only. Outside visitors are not permitted during retreats.

  • The ranch is not available for early arrival or extended stays. If you are traveling from a distance, there are accommodation options nearby in Valley Springs and at Lake Camanche.

  • If you anticipate arriving late or needing to leave early, we ask that you contact us in advance. Because the retreat builds intentionally from start to finish, we encourage full participation whenever possible.

  • Yes. During unstructured time, participants are welcome to step out if needed. Valley Springs is a short drive away and offers coffee shops, groceries, and small-town amenities. We simply ask that you communicate with the team if you plan to leave the property during a retreat.

  • Wine and beer may be enjoyed in moderation during the evenings after daily programming has concluded. Spirits are not permitted.

We ask that alcohol use remain respectful of the shared environment and the safety of both participants and animals.

Retreat themes and dates are shared on our Events page.

If something here feels steady or interesting, you’re welcome to explore further — in your own time.
