Lay of the Land

A Living, Working Ranch

Cowgirl Up Ranch is an active, lived-in place.

Horses move between paddocks. Animals graze, rest, and interact. People come and go throughout the day as part of everyday ranch life, sessions, and retreats.

Some spaces are shared and social. Others are open or quiet. Movement across the ranch changes depending on the day, the animals, and what’s happening at the time.

Nothing here is staged or set aside solely for visitors. The work at HorseSpeak happens within the natural rhythms of the ranch — alongside the animals who live here and the land itself.

You don’t need to know where to go or how things work in advance. The ranch is designed to be experienced slowly, one space at a time.

The Land We Are On

The ranch sits on land with a long human history — shaped by the people, animals, seasons, and movement over thousands of years.

The area surrounding Burson lies within the traditional homelands of the Miwok people, who lived in close relationship with this region — guided by water, food sources, animals, and seasonal rhythms.

Evidence of early Indigenous presence can still be found nearby, including traditional grinding stones used to prepare acorns and other foods. They remain as quiet reminders that this land has long been a place of nourishment and care.

At HorseSpeak, we acknowledge that this land carries stories and meaning that long predate modern ranch use. We approach it with humility — caring for the land as a living partner in the work that happens here.
